The
musical premiered in 1993 at the Adelphi and ran for nearly four years
- seen by over two million people. Now it is to be shown again -
opening 15th december at the Comedy. The story A young man Joe Gillis is on the run from collection agents. He dodges his way to Hollywood hoping to sell a script he has written. The script is refused and he finds himself, at first mistaken for a pet mortician meeting a great old film star Norma Desmond herself re-enacting her stardom in her fantasy. Joe is invited to stay and help Norma with her new script that she wants to finish for her 'comeback' with Cecil B De Mille. . He undertakes the task of editing her script and she starts to draw him into her life as a recluse in a dream. She is encouraged by an old friend and Joe but the script does not go well. The visit to her old studio and the culmination of the relationship causes the famous dramatic ending. This is one of Andrew Lloyd Webber's most loved musicals as the songs are nostalgic and the musical takes a look at the way people can get lost in their role and escape who they really are in the silver screen days of Hollywood.
