History & Background The 39 Steps opened in September 2006. was awarded Best New Comedy at the 2007 Laurence Olivier Awards. Alfred Hitchcock's cinematic masterpiece was based on a 1918 era - a spy novel. He upgraded the war from ww1 to ww2 and added a love interest His version of The 39 Steps introduced humour to it. Indeed he introduced that certain humour into the spy genre of thrillers generally it has been said. This proceeded to today's play which added a touch of vintage Monty Python. This gave us The 39 Steps—an admixture of "Hilarious whodunit, spy thriller and quick-change comedy"to quote Curtainup.com. The plan to sell the movie at the box office is welcomed. See the movie after the play and it will certainly "add", Anything you say about the story of a spy thriller is a spoiler. The Production From a lavish film to a little play in a Victorian playhouse took ingenuity and imagination. Above all an iconic simplicity in picking the set. "Its as clever as the plot so here again it's spoiler city to be avoided." It is enough to say there are four actors. The lighting and the changes are as clever as the plot and too much detail would spoil the delight you will get watching the action - not only the actors - also the costumes the set and the lighting. Director Maria Aitken. Cast: John Hopkins (Richard Hannay), Natalie Walter (Annabella, Pamela, Margaret), Martyn Ellis (Clown), Simon Gregor (clown). Sets and Costumes: Peter McKintosh Lighting: Kevin Adams |
