Blood Brothers

A long running show - since 1987 -

Will Russell's hit  Blood Brothers has attracted top quality singers and actors to perform the characters he created in 1982 based on his book. He wrote his own music and lyrics   Mrs. Johnstone the leading lady, has been played by some famous names.  The first Mrs Johnstone was Barbara Dickson who was awarded a 'Society of West End Theatres'  Award for Best Actress in a Musical in 1983. This and 1983 the Laurence Olivier Awards Musical Of the Year at the Lyric Theatre

This started to attract attention and success to the show which has now become a huge success after humble beginnings - opening at the Liverpool Playhouse in 1983. Now it has been a hit all over the world. In the USA, the long Broadway run broke records and has been highly praised in the coast to coast tour and also nominated for six Tony Awards.

The story
The book is a classic enough to have been set for study for examinations. It tells of twin brothers who have been brought up apart and know each other in childhood and later in life. The parts portray many issues of class, a maturing brotherhood - a fact hidden from the boys themselves with a promise made by his mother Mrs Johnstone to the adoptive mother Mrs Lyons.  As they progress through life, many poignant moments and circumstances are beautifully acted by the top class casts.

The Guardian describes it as 'weaving a close-knit story about the working of fate and destiny...it carries one along with it in almost unreserved enjoyment'

It has had standing ovations ever since it was performed in the early eighties in Liverpool. The London audience has felt the same ever since. Ten million people have seen this production.
