Then John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John starred in the film of the show and their performances carried Grease to higher levels altogether. The Mirror dubbed it a "period piece - a pastiche of the 1950s" - hence the 50's was transformed from a boring and rather horrible little era for teenagers - to being even nostalgic. Travolta made decent meal in his personal characterisation from what would be and remain a packet of saltless crisps.

To the extent that this was the case - the fifties was one good reason for insurrection from the grey normality of post war repression. As a show it was made about America where teenagers dress and act en masse so the swirly dresses and leather jackets do make an attractive spectacle.
The new production of Grease, which incorporated all the hit songs from the movie, opened at the Dominion Theatre where it had a record run. The hit songs from the movie, being performed live are what give the show it's life and energy.
The story
Teenage love and peer stardom through gossip and playground politics. And don't we all love the same story told again and again? Yes we do. (only the Teletubbies openly admit it).
