The show features 27 of Abba's best known songs.  Apart from the songs the show has nothing to do with the Abba story. Over 30 million people all around the world have seen the show and it's a fact that the music makes MAMMA MIA! a hugely popular show that makes the audience feel happy. People love seeing their favorite songs performed live with great dancing.
At the time of writing there are 10 shows of this type - musicals based on a past pop or rock star where a sufficient number of the songs hit big - or if it's based on an old film. Nostalgia and familiarity coupled with live music is clearly a winning combination.

The Story
Catherine Johnson's wrote the story of a girl Sophie who wants to find her father to take her down the aisle on her wedding day.  Her mother Donna had (at least) 3 lovers that could have been her father (Sam, Harry and Bill who had been in a singing group 'Donna and the Dynamos'). It is luckily a friendly story full of love and laughter and several emotional upheavals for interest.  Fun and friendship is the overriding factor on this Greek island.  On the eve of her wedding Sophie can't tell which of the three is her father.
