Originally composed in 1980 by the French composer Claude-Michel Schönberg,  the background of this acclaimed and longest running musical drama the insurrection of the poor in France.  is It opened 1985 in the Barbican and then moved to the West End first to the Palace theatre and then to the Queen's where it is still doing well. Critics were annoyed at the temerity of taking great literature (Victor Hugo)and making it into a musical. Despite poor reviews the public loves the production.

"...the songs play over and over and over again in your head; you feel deliciously depressed and uplifted at the same time; and you feel like stopping repression somehow--somewhere--some way".
Jamie Rhein

The Story
The lives of 'les miserables' are fraught with the overt hardship and cruelty of a Napoleonic revolutionary era and the plot spans the life and times of Jean Valjean who is hunted relentlessly by inspector Javert.  He meets kindness from the Bishop of Digne which softens his heart.  He rescues the small daughter of a friend - Cosette - and others during the action of the underground rebels and the police. Javert finally responds to Valjean's principles of mercy....

....The story is taken forward by a big cast of enthusiastic and talented players who provide what has been one of the most popular musicals to run in the West End.
