Hairspray is set
in the early 60's and has some serious overtones such as racism in
Baltimore way back then. And the leading Tracy did something about it -
not just griping references to it as a problem. The show is high energy featuring fat ladies who have come into their own as stars reminiscent of the olden days of Opera. In real life TV competition shows have brought some very charismatic fat girls into the limelight too. The show is based on an 80's film. The show is a lot of fun and runs at high energy all the way through the 2 hours and 40 mins. "You can't stop my happiness, 'cuz I like the way I am. And you just can't stop my knife and fork when I see a Christmas ham! And if you don't like the way I look, then I just don't give a damn!" Michael Ball tops the bill as Tracy's mum - not hamming up in drag - playing the part with sensitivity as a woman. (He will no longer appear in Monday evening performances). Story Tracy starts as awkward - a bit of a misfit among her peers. Notwithstanding the way she looks she is determined to dance and wins a spot on a local dance show (The corny Collins show). Hugely encouraged she has a chance to live her dream. In fact, in this part - her stage debut - she is fulfilling a dream and the sense of reality comes through. Now she is popular - even a 'teenage sensation' The story goes on to see her relationship develop with a local 'heart throb' and also to winning the competition despite having annoyed the programme organisers by her insistence that black and white men and women should be allowed to dance together. • Director - Jack O'Brien • choreographer - Jerry Mitchell • musical director - Lon Hoyt Cast Leanne Jones is a rare newcomer and has clearly fulfilled the expectations of her that she has all the ebullience and presence of a 'proper star'. • Edna Turnblad - Michael Ball • Tracy Turnblad - Leanne Jones • Velma Von Tussle -Tracie Bennett • Inez - Natalie Best • Male Authority cover - Dermot Canavan • Penny Pingleton - Elinor Collett • Motormouth Maybelle - Johnnie Fiori • Seaweed - Adrian Hansel • Corny Collins - Paul Manuel • Female Authority figure - Wendy Somerville • Amber Von Tussle - Rachel Wooding • Link Larkin - Ben James-Ellis • Wilbur turnblad - Ian Talbot |
